DMT: What is DMT? Effects, dangers, overdose signs, and the law in 2026

Short answer: DMT (dimethyltryptamine) is a powerful, short-acting psychedelic found in many plants. Smoked or vaped, it lasts 5 to 20 minutes. In ayahuasca, a South American brew, it is combined with plants containing MAO inhibitors, which make it active by mouth for 4 to 6 hours and create dangerous drug interactions. DMT is Schedule I, with court-recognized religious exemptions for ayahuasca.

Key takeaways

  • What it is: DMT is a serotonergic psychedelic (tryptamine) and a Schedule I controlled substance in the US.
  • Medical use: Investigational (depression).
  • Timing: effects start in seconds (smoked); 30 to 60 minutes (ayahuasca) and last 5 to 20 minutes (smoked); 4 to 6 hours (ayahuasca).
  • Most dangerous mix: Lithium, which can cause seizures and dangerous reactions reported.
  • Naloxone: it does not reverse this drug, but give it whenever opioids could be involved.
  • Dependence risk: Low.
  • Legal route: none. Schedule I substances cannot be prescribed.

What is DMT?

DMT occurs naturally in many plants and in trace amounts in animals. Taken by mouth, it is broken down by the enzyme MAO before it can act. Ayahuasca combines a DMT-containing plant with the vine Banisteriopsis caapi, whose harmala alkaloids block MAO.

Smoked DMT produces an intense, rapid experience within seconds: vivid geometric visuals, a sense of entering other worlds or meeting entities, and loss of sense of self, lasting 5 to 20 minutes.

How long does DMT last?

  • Starts working: Seconds (smoked); 30 to 60 minutes (ayahuasca)
  • Effects last: 5 to 20 minutes (smoked); 4 to 6 hours (ayahuasca)
  • Half-life: About 15 minutes

Smoked or vaped, about 5 to 20 minutes. Ayahuasca lasts 4 to 6 hours.

Timing varies with the dose, the form, how it is taken, liver and kidney function, age, and other drugs taken at the same time.

What are the biggest risks of DMT?

Psychological risks: intense fear, confusion, and, in people with a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, lasting psychiatric effects.

Ayahuasca and medicines: because ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, combining it with SSRIs, many other antidepressants, stimulants, MDMA, tramadol, or some foods and supplements can cause serotonin syndrome or a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

Retreats: deaths and assaults have been reported at unregulated ayahuasca retreats, sometimes linked to added plants, other drugs, or lack of medical screening.

What are the signs of a DMT overdose, and what should you do?

Physical overdose from smoked DMT alone is rare. Danger signs, especially with ayahuasca, include very high blood pressure, severe headache, chest pain, seizures, high temperature, muscle rigidity, and confusion, which can signal serotonin syndrome.

If someone is having a dangerous reaction

  • Call 911 for a seizure, chest pain, a very high temperature, trouble breathing, unresponsiveness, or if the person may harm themselves or others.
  • Move them to a quiet, safe place away from roads, water, heights, and crowds. Stay with them and speak calmly.
  • Do not leave the person alone and do not give them other drugs or alcohol to calm them down.
  • If they become unresponsive, place them on their side and give naloxone in case opioids are involved.

Is DMT addictive?

DMT is not considered physically addictive and does not cause a withdrawal syndrome. Unlike other psychedelics, smoked DMT shows little tolerance with repeated use. Some people use it compulsively, but this is uncommon.

See the withdrawal timelines and the full DMT withdrawal guide.

DMT is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, meaning it is considered to have a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. It cannot be prescribed, and possessing, making, or selling it is a federal crime.

  • Possession: under federal law, a first conviction for possessing any controlled substance without a valid prescription can bring up to one year in prison and a minimum fine of $1,000. Penalties rise with prior convictions.
  • Selling or sharing: distribution carries much heavier federal penalties, which increase with the amount involved and are higher still if the drug causes death or serious injury.
  • State law: states set their own penalties, and most drug cases are prosecuted under state law. Penalties range from a civil fine to long prison terms depending on the state, the amount, and prior record.

Frequently asked questions about DMT

How long does a DMT trip last?

Smoked or vaped, about 5 to 20 minutes. Ayahuasca lasts 4 to 6 hours.

Is ayahuasca legal in the US?

DMT is Schedule I, but some churches, including the União do Vegetal, have legal protection to use ayahuasca in ceremonies.

Can you drink ayahuasca on antidepressants?

No. Ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, and combining it with SSRIs or similar drugs can cause serotonin syndrome. Stopping antidepressants must be done with a prescriber.

Is DMT in the human body?

Trace amounts of DMT have been found in animals and humans, but its role is unknown.
