Zurzuvae uses: what zuranolone is prescribed for

Zuranolone treats postpartum depression, which affects about 1 in 7 people after giving birth. In trials, symptoms improved within 3 to 15 days, faster than typical antidepressants.[1]

It is related to brexanolone (Zulresso), an earlier postpartum depression treatment given as a 60-hour intravenous infusion.[1]

Zurzuvae dosage: how zuranolone is usually prescribed

The figures below come from the FDA-approved label and describe how prescribers typically use zuranolone. They are not personal dosing advice. A prescriber sets the dose for each person and adjusts it over time.[1]

Zurzuvae (zuranolone) side effects and risks

FDA boxed warnings

  • Impaired ability to drive or do other dangerous activities: zuranolone causes drowsiness and slowed thinking. Do not drive or operate machinery for at least 12 hours after each dose. People may not be able to judge their own impairment.[1]
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviors: as with other antidepressants, there is a risk in children and young adults.

Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, diarrhea, tiredness, and urinary tract infection.[1]

CNS depression: with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives it can cause deep sedation, confusion, and loss of consciousness.[1]

Pregnancy: it may harm a fetus; effective contraception is advised during treatment and for 1 week after.[1]

Zurzuvae overdose: signs of zuranolone overdose and what to do

Overdose is expected to cause excessive sleepiness, confusion, and loss of consciousness, especially with other depressants.[1]

If someone may have overdosed

  • Call 911 if the person is unresponsive, hard to wake, or breathing slowly.
  • For advice when the person is awake and stable, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 (US, free, 24 hours).
  • If opioids could be involved, including pills not from a pharmacy, give naloxone if you have it. Naloxone does not reverse zuranolone, but it will not harm the person.
  • Stay with the person and place them on their side if they are drowsy or vomiting.

Does zuranolone cause withdrawal?

Zuranolone is taken for only 14 days. Trials did not identify a withdrawal syndrome, but it is Schedule IV because high doses can cause sedation and euphoria similar to other sedatives.[1]

  1. After the 14 daysCourse endsNo taper is needed.
  2. WeeksFollow-upMood should be monitored; depression can return.
  3. OngoingSupportTherapy, support, and other treatment may be needed.

If symptoms of postpartum depression return or there are thoughts of self-harm, contact a clinician or call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262, or 988.

Can you order Zurzuvae (zuranolone) online legally?

Yes, but only with a valid prescription and only from a pharmacy licensed in your state. Many licensed pharmacies, including mail-order pharmacies run by insurers, fill zuranolone prescriptions online and ship them. Buying zuranolone from a website that does not require a prescription is illegal, and the product is often fake.[5][7]

  1. See a licensed clinicianA clinician evaluates you in person or by telemedicine and decides whether zuranolone is appropriate.
  2. The prescription goes to a pharmacyPrescriptions are usually sent electronically, straight from the prescriber to the pharmacy you choose.
  3. The pharmacy checks and fills itA pharmacist verifies the prescription and your identity, then dispenses the medicine in person or by mail.

Signs that an online seller is illegal:

  • It sells zuranolone with no prescription, or after only a short online questionnaire.
  • It takes orders through social media, messaging apps, or email.
  • It asks for payment in cryptocurrency, gift cards, or money transfers.
  • It has no US street address, no state pharmacy license, and no pharmacist to speak to.
  • Its prices are far below those of ordinary pharmacies, or it ships from another country.

The FDA's BeSafeRx tool links to each state's license lookup, and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy lists verified online pharmacies.[5][6]

Zurzuvae price: how much does Zurzuvae (zuranolone) cost without insurance?

Zurzuvae has a list price of about $15,900 for a 14-day course; most insurers cover it, often with prior authorization, and the maker offers assistance.

What you pay depends on the strength, the number of doses, your insurance plan, and the pharmacy. Cash prices for the same prescription can differ several times over between pharmacies in the same town, so check current prices before you fill it.

Ways to pay less, legally:

  • Ask the prescriber whether a generic zuranolone is available. FDA-approved generics work the same way as the brand and usually cost much less.
  • Compare cash prices between pharmacies before you fill the prescription.
  • Use a free prescription discount card, such as GoodRx or SingleCare, when you pay cash. These cards cannot be combined with insurance on the same fill.
  • For brand-name medicines, check the manufacturer's savings program or patient assistance program.
  • Ask about a 90-day supply or your insurer's mail-order pharmacy, which often lowers the cost per dose when your prescriber agrees it is appropriate.

Warning: A price far below what licensed pharmacies charge, especially with no prescription required, is a strong sign of an illegal seller and counterfeit medicine.[5]

Common questions about Zurzuvae (zuranolone)

How fast does Zurzuvae work?

In trials, some people improved within 3 days, with clear benefit by day 15.

Why can't you drive on Zurzuvae (zuranolone)?

It causes drowsiness and slowed thinking that can last into the next day, so driving is not allowed for at least 12 hours after each dose.

Can you breastfeed while taking Zurzuvae (zuranolone)?

Small amounts pass into breast milk; discuss risks and benefits with the prescriber.

Is Zurzuvae an antidepressant?

Yes, but it works differently from SSRIs, by enhancing GABA-A receptors.

Is Zurzuvae (zuranolone) a controlled substance?

Yes, Schedule IV.

Can you buy Zurzuvae (zuranolone) without a prescription?

No. Zurzuvae (zuranolone) is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US, so it is illegal to buy or possess it without a valid prescription. Websites and social media sellers that offer it without one are not legal pharmacies, and the FDA warns that products sold this way are often counterfeit, contaminated, or the wrong strength. The legal route is a visit with a licensed clinician, in person or by telehealth, and a prescription filled at a state-licensed pharmacy. The FDA's BeSafeRx tool and the NABP's safe pharmacy list help confirm an online pharmacy is real.
